A group of vutures is called a wake.

This wake of vultures was hovering not far from my house. This is not the first time I have seen them do this either. It is a very powerful sight seeing that many large raptors flying so close. Death is not far away.

JeffersonianSOBS.org has existed in many states over the years. The brainchild of Bryan McKenzie, a local reporter and motorcycle enthusiast, the website started life as a Facebook group. I got involved with this project a few years ago and birthed its current state. Walking a fine line between acting Jeffersonian or a SOB, the website is primarily geared towards motorcycle news that also hosts an event calendar and forum. The original theme, The Local, was purchased from the good people at Pro Theme Design. It was hacked, prodded, and lovingly nudged into the current design. I added the forum install, events calendar, and made several other modifications.

Front page modified from 4 column design to 3 to allow for a larger featured section.

Photo gallery page built using the NexGen plugin.

Event calendar page built using Alex Tingle's excellent calendar plugin.

Forum built using the latest version of bbPress.

Custom include to limit homepage hacks.

Andrew came to me and expressed he wasn’t happy with his current website. Andrew is an amazing photographer and his previous site just wasn’t doing his images justice. Like most photographers, smart ones anyway, he didn’t want the design to distract from his pictures. The old design was dark and had graphical elements that distracted from the photos. His fantastic photos were much smaller than on the current site. It was important to keep his e-commerce capabilities through Photoshelter intact. In addition to cleaning up the design, Andrew wanted his blog to be integrated into the design and unified. We were able to save time and money by not reinventing the wheel. Through a combination of a self-hosted WordPress install and Photoshelter hosting, both goals were met beautifully. Photoshelter has several built-in templates and we picked the one that most closely matched Andrew’s aesthetic and modified it until it was exactly what he wanted. Much the same happened on the WordPress side.

Great Pyrenees

The Pyrenean Mountain Dog, known as the Great Pyrenees in the United States, is a large breed of dog, used as a livestock guardian dog. – Wiki Link

As soon as I saw this shot on the back of my camera, it reminded not of a dog, but a cat. Reminiscent of Steve Winter’s work with Snow Leopards. Now this is hardly comparable to stalking lethal pussy cats through the mountains but the tone of the image is similar.

On the way home from the Phillies game last weekend we took the road (slightly) less traveled to beat some of the ballpark traffic congesting I-95 North. We went down ~~Delaware Ave.~~ Columbus Boulevard past the SS United States. She has been withering away berthed at pier 82 since 1996, but still holds the Trans-Atlantic speed record. Damn shame.

On its maiden voyage on 4 July 1952, United States broke the transatlantic speed record held by Queen Mary for the previous 14 years by over 10 hours, making the maiden crossing from the Ambrose lightship at New York Harbor to Bishop Rock off Cornwall, UK in 3 days, 10 hours, 40 minutes at an average speed of 35.59 knots (40.96 mph) The liner also broke the westbound crossing record by returning to America in 3 days 12 hours and 12 minutes at an average speed of 34.51 knots (39.71 mph), thereby obtaining both the eastbound and westbound Blue Ribands — the first time a U.S. flagged ship had held the speed record since the SS Baltic claimed the prize a century earlier. – Wiki link.
